History
Corinne Bailey Rae sings quietly and arranges around the quiet. Her voice is light, slightly grainy at the top and rhythmically loose, and the records built for it leave a great deal of room: clean electric guitar, brushed drums, bass well back in the mix. She came out of Leeds rather than London, with a background in indie bands before soul, and that shows in the guitar writing more than in the singing. The debut album went to number one in the UK, was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize and made "Put Your Records On" and "Like a Star" into standards of a kind, songs that sound effortless and are difficult to sing. The Sea, which followed, is darker and much less polished, and it earned a second Mercury nomination. Later work has gone further still from that first sound, into noisier and more experimental territory with little to do with the easy summer feel people attached to her at the start. She has also won Grammy Awards, including as a featured artist on another musician's record.
