History

Cordae came up as a technical rapper in a period when technique had gone out of fashion, and he made that the point. His verses are dense, multisyllabic and structured around actual arguments, delivered in a clear mid-range voice with very little processing, and the beats behind them lean toward live drums, soul samples and warm bass rather than trap production. He is from Maryland, and he first drew wide attention with a response record aimed at an older generation of rappers, an act of nerve that framed him as someone willing to argue in public. The Lost Boy, released when he was twenty-two, earned two Grammy nominations and set the tone: coming-of-age writing that keeps the doubt in rather than editing it out. From a Bird's Eye View is heavier, built around grief and the cost of sudden success. "RNP" is the light one, a swaggering funk-driven single that shows he can carry a hook as well as a verse. The recognisable trait is clarity, with every word audible.
