History

CocoRosie built their sound from things most bands would throw away: toy pianos, children's instruments, kitchen clatter, beatboxing and cheap drum machines, laid under two voices that could hardly be more different. One sister sang in a trained, operatic soprano, the other in a nasal, childlike drawl borrowed from blues and hip-hop. The duo of sisters Bianca and Sierra Casady came together in Paris in the early 2000s, and their debut, La maison de mon rêve (2004), was recorded at home with a lo-fi intimacy that became part of its charm. Noah's Ark (2005) and The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn (2007) widened the palette with guests, harp and more hip-hop production, while keeping the fairy-tale strangeness. They were grouped with Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom under the freak folk tag, though their mix of folk, trip-hop and cabaret sat apart from that scene too. What gives them away is the clash of those two voices over a crackling, homemade bed of sound, part lullaby and part nightmare.
