History

Clan of Xymox built their sound on cold drum machines, chiming chorus-drenched guitars and sequenced synth lines, a mix that sat between gothic rock and the darkwave that grew out of it. The group formed in the Netherlands in the early 1980s around singer and guitarist Ronny Moorings, with bassist and singer Anka Wolbert and keyboard player Pieter Nooten. They were one of the few non-British acts on 4AD in that period, and their self-titled debut (1985) and Medusa (1986) sat comfortably next to the label's atmospheric, shadowy catalogue. Their songs combined danceable electronic pulses with brooding, romantic melodies, which made them a fixture in goth clubs. Late in the decade the band shortened its name to Xymox and moved towards brighter synth-pop and dance music, before Moorings returned to the original name and the darker sound in the 1990s. A listener recognises the early records by Moorings's mournful voice over icy, mechanical rhythm and shimmering guitar.
