History

Circle Jerks played short, furious, sarcastic hardcore and helped define the Los Angeles beach punk scene. The band formed in 1979 in the South Bay when singer Keith Morris, who had just left Black Flag, teamed up with guitarist Greg Hetson from Redd Kross. Their debut, Group Sex, released in 1980, packs fourteen songs into roughly a quarter of an hour: blasts of fast drums and buzzing guitars, Morris's snotty, yelping delivery, and lyrics that mock suburbia, police, conformity and the punk scene itself. They also appeared in The Decline of Western Civilization, the film that documented the LA punk underground. Wild in the Streets in 1982 broadened the sound a little, and its title track was a cover, while Golden Shower of Hits in 1983 closed with a mocking medley of soft-rock standards. The band split and reformed several times, with Morris and Hetson as the constant pair. They are recognised by breakneck brevity, a wiseguy sense of humour and that unmistakable nasal shout.
