History
Christine and the Queens is the stage name of French singer-songwriter Héloïse Letissier (born June 1, 1988, in Nantes; now performing as Rahim Redcar). After dropping out of a Lyon drama conservatory in 2010, a trip to London exposed the artist to drag performers at the Soho club Madame Jojo's, whose community inspired both the moniker and a genre self-described as "freakpop." The debut album Chaleur humaine (2014) blended synth-pop, art pop, and electropop, reached number two on the French and UK charts, was certified diamond in France, and became one of the best-selling debut records in UK chart history. The 2018 follow-up Chris earned further acclaim, named album of the year by Clash, The Guardian, and The Independent, with the single "Girlfriend" picked as Time magazine's song of the year. Later releases include the EP La vita nuova (2020), written after the death of the artist's mother, and the albums Redcar les adorables étoiles (prologue) (2022), Paranoia, Angels, True Love (2023), and Hopecore (2024). In 2016, Vanity Fair ranked the artist number one on its list of France's most influential cultural figures, ahead of the sitting president.
