History

Chihei Hatakeyama makes slow, enveloping ambient music out of guitars, processed until the strings dissolve into long tones, soft drones and gently shifting harmonics. Much of his work sounds like it was recorded through fog: loops that repeat with small changes, tape-like warmth and hiss, and chords that swell and fade without ever resolving into a melody in the usual sense. He comes from Japan and is based in Tokyo. His first full-length album, Minima Moralia, came out in 2006 on Kranky, the Chicago label known for patient, textural records, which placed him alongside the international drone and ambient scene from the start. In 2010 he launched his own label, White Paddy Mountain, and since then he has been extremely prolific, releasing a steady stream of solo albums and collaborations. Records such as Ghostly Garden and Above the Desert show the range of his palette, from misty and pastoral to wide and desolate. A listener recognises his music by its softness: no sharp edges, only slow waves of blurred guitar sound.
