History

Chelsea Grin are known for some of the heaviest, most breakdown-focused deathcore of the 2010s: extremely low-tuned guitars, slamming rhythms, guttural vocals and a production style designed to hit as hard as possible. The band formed in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2007 and grew out of the online and touring scene that made deathcore one of the most visible heavy styles of the period. Their full-length debut Desolation of Eden appeared in 2010 and My Damnation followed in 2011, both mixing technical death metal riffing with long, punishing breakdowns. Ashes to Ashes in 2014 kept the weight but added more melody and darker atmosphere. Alex Koehler fronted the band through those years, and after his departure Tom Barber, formerly of Lorna Shore, took over the vocals and brought a wide range from deep lows to piercing highs. The band's lineup changed several times, but the core approach stayed the same. Listeners recognise Chelsea Grin by the sheer density of the low end, sudden drops into half-time breakdowns and vocals that sound more like an instrument of force than a voice telling a story.
