History

Chano Domínguez plays jazz piano as if it were a flamenco guitar, turning bulerías, soleá and tangos rhythms into chord voicings, and treating the piano as both melody instrument and percussion. He comes from Cádiz, and before jazz he played keyboards in Cai, a band from the Andalusian rock scene of the late 1970s. In his own trios and larger groups he brought palmas, cajón and flamenco singers onto the bandstand next to bass and drums, and albums such as Hecho a mano and Oye cómo viene show that blend at its fullest. His appearance in Fernando Trueba's documentary Calle 54 introduced him to a wide international jazz audience. In Flamenco Sketches he reworked the music of Miles Davis's Kind of Blue through flamenco rhythm, a project that sums up his approach: jazz harmony and improvisation, but with Andalusian compás as the ground under it. A listener recognises Chano Domínguez by crisp rhythmic left-hand patterns, modal harmony with a Phrygian colour and right-hand lines that sound like sung melisma translated to keys.
