History
猫 シ Corp. is the producer whose album Palm Mall (2014) became a defining record of mallsoft, the branch of vaporwave that tries to recreate the experience of walking through a shopping centre. Instead of chopping samples into loops, the project layers soft-rock and easy-listening fragments under crowd murmur, footsteps, fountain splashes and public-address announcements, so the music seems to drift from shop speakers somewhere down the concourse. The effect is less about any single melody than about space: reverb, distance and the faint sadness of commercial places that are half empty. News at 11 (2016) turned the same method toward television, stitching weather-channel music, news bulletins and broadcast idents into an uneasy portrait of a day of breaking news, and it drew wide attention for how directly it dealt with memory and media. Both albums show the project's strength, which is scene-setting through found sound. The records reward patience and leave the sense of standing inside an environment rather than listening to a track.
