History
Cassandra Wilson (born December 4, 1955, in Jackson, Mississippi) is an American jazz singer, songwriter, and producer whose career took off in New York City in the mid-1980s. After early classical piano and clarinet training, she moved to New York in 1982 and became a founding vocalist of the M-Base collective led by saxophonist Steve Coleman, a group that folded funk and avant-garde jazz into a single sound. Recording for JMT and later Blue Note Records, Wilson built a signature style that wove blues, country, and folk into jazz phrasing, praised by critic Gary Giddins for its "unmistakable timbre and attack." She has won two Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album, for New Moon Daughter (1996) and Loverly (2008), and Time magazine named her "America's Best Singer" in 2001. In 1999 she received the Miles Davis Prize at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, and in 2010 she was inducted into the Mississippi Blues Trail.
