History

Carpenter Brut takes the synthwave template and pushes it toward metal. The retro components are all present, gated drums, saw-wave leads, arpeggios running under everything, but the mix is louder and dirtier than the genre's norm, with distorted guitar cutting through and drums hitting like a hardcore record. The project comes from France and works largely without a public face, releasing a run of EPs through the 2010s that circulated on YouTube and in gaming communities before conventional press noticed. Turbo Killer is the entry point for most listeners, as much for its short film of a video, a chase sequence full of fire and occult imagery, as for the track itself. Le Perv is slower and more menacing, built on an organ-like lead. Roller Mobster keeps the horror film feel the name implies. Later albums added vocals and a rock band structure, but the core appeal has not moved: music that sounds like the soundtrack to a film too violent to have been made.
