History

Caron Wheeler's voice, warm and weighty with a gospel lift, is the one most people hear when they think of Soul II Soul's peak. A London singer who started out in lovers rock and worked as a session and backing vocalist, she sang lead on "Keep On Movin'" and "Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)", two records that defined British soul at the end of the 1980s and won the group a Grammy. She then went solo. Her debut UK Blak mixed slow-rolling Soul II Soul style beats with songs about Black British identity and African heritage, and the single "Livin' in the Light" became her signature solo hit. Beach of the War Goddess followed, with a smoother production that sat closer to contemporary R&B. Her place in the UK street soul story rests on that combination: a big, controlled soul voice sitting on top of sound-system rhythms rather than slick studio funk. She later returned to Soul II Soul for live dates, and listeners still recognise her by the rich low register and unhurried phrasing.
