History
Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino plays pizzica, the fast, spinning dance music of the Salento peninsula at the heel of Italy, and has done more than most to carry it onto international stages. The group was formed in 1975 by the writer Rina Durante as part of a wider effort to document and revive the music of southern Apulia, including the Griko-speaking villages that give the name its Greek tinge. Leadership later passed through the Durante family, and since 2007 the ensemble has been directed by Mauro Durante, who plays violin and frame drum. The sound rests on the tamburello, the large frame drum that drives the relentless triplet pulse of the tarantella, with violin, accordion, bouzouki, guitar, bagpipes and harmonica around it, plus a dancer on stage. The songs come from the old ritual of tarantism, in which music and dance were believed to cure the bite of the spider. The group has toured widely in Europe and North America, played festivals such as WOMAD, and worked with Ludovico Einaudi and Stewart Copeland while keeping the raw, hypnotic drive of village pizzica.
