History

Candlemass took the slow, crushing riffs of early Black Sabbath and gave them grandeur, operatic vocals and a sense of tragedy, largely defining what came to be called epic doom metal. The band was formed in Stockholm, Sweden, in the mid-1980s by bassist and main songwriter Leif Edling. Their 1986 debut, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, sung by Johan Längquist, gave the style its name and its anthem in the song "Solitude": funereal tempos, huge guitar tone and lyrics about death, loneliness and faith. The following albums, Nightfall in 1987 and Ancient Dreams in 1988, featured vocalist Messiah Marcolin, whose theatrical, powerful voice and monk-robed stage presence became closely tied to the band's image. These records balanced heavy, slow riffs with classical touches and memorable melodies, and they influenced generations of doom bands across Europe and beyond. Candlemass have gone through splits, reunions and singer changes since, with Längquist later returning. Listeners recognise them by the towering, slow riffs, the soaring clean vocals and the solemn, almost liturgical atmosphere.
