History
Calibre makes drum and bass that sounds unhurried even at full tempo: warm chords, soul and jazz samples, rolling bass and drums placed with a light, precise touch. Behind the name is Dominick Martin from Belfast, Northern Ireland, who has been producing since the mid-1990s and is widely credited as one of the producers who shaped liquid funk. His album Musique Concrète came out in 2001 on Creative Source, and in 2003 he set up his own label, Signature Records, which has carried most of his work since. Second Sun, released on Signature in 2005, is often named as his strongest record, and the Shelflife series later brought unreleased tracks out of his archive. He is known for an unusually large and steady output and for keeping a low profile, letting the records do the talking. The tracks are easy to spot, with a melancholy, deep feel, a sense of space and drums that swing more than they hit.
