History

B'z are a hard rock operation for two: a guitarist who writes riffs with the clarity of 1980s arena rock, and a singer with a high, carrying tenor that cuts through a wall of overdrive. The duo came together at the end of the 1980s and spent the following decades as the largest-selling act in Japanese music, achieved without much dilution of the formula, guitars first, choruses built to be shouted back. The guitar tone is central, a thick sound with hard pick attack, placed high in the mix where another producer would have put keyboards. Ultra Soul is the song most listeners outside Japan meet first, a stadium-sized chorus dragged along by one insistent riff. Ai no Bakudan and Juice show the funkier and the heavier edges of the same approach. The lyrics move freely between Japanese and English lines, and the vocal often doubles the riff, which is much of the reason these songs lodge in the head.
