History
Butyrka works the hard end of Russian shanson: acoustic guitar, bayan and a low male lead singing about prison terms, lost years and the people waiting outside the fence. The band took shape at the turn of the 2000s, when shanson stopped being a kiosk cassette format and moved onto national radio, and they became one of the acts that rotation was built around. The arrangements stay deliberately plain, a strummed guitar figure, a bass line that stays audible, an accordion answering the vocal, because the genre lives on the story rather than on production. Kolshchik, addressed to a tattoo artist, turned into a standard that other performers cover and audiences sing back word for word. Tsentral and Zapakhla osen mark the two poles the group works between, the barrack ballad and the seasonal lament. Live, the material relies on a heavy, unhurried delivery and on a hall that already knows every line.
