History

Brooks & Dunn paired two Nashville songwriters at the start of the 1990s and turned that pairing into the best-selling duo country music has produced. Ronnie Dunn took most of the lead singing, a big pliable voice with a honky-tonk cry in it, while Kix Brooks handled harmonies, the up-tempo material and most of the onstage motion. The catalogue alternates two modes. One is the dance-floor shuffle with a walking bass and a fiddle break, of which Boot Scootin' Boogie became the template for a decade of line-dance nights. The other is slow neon-lit heartbreak, Neon Moon being the clearest case, where the steel guitar carries as much of the song as the vocal does. Their records borrowed arena rock scale, loud drums and stacked electric guitars, at the exact moment mainstream country radio was moving that way, and for most of the 1990s they were the format's default headliners. The two stopped touring together at the end of the 2000s and later returned for a Las Vegas residency.
