History

Brigada Victor Jara built its sound on the rural songs of Portugal, taken from field collections and village singers and rearranged for a band of traditional instruments. The group came out of Coimbra in the mid-1970s, in the cultural rush that followed the Carnation Revolution, and took its name from the Chilean singer Víctor Jara, killed after the 1973 coup. That name says a lot about the spirit: folk music as something that belongs to ordinary people and deserves to be heard on its own terms. Eito Fora in 1977 and Tamborileiro set the approach, drawing on work songs, dances and ballads from Trás-os-Montes, the Beiras, the Alentejo and the islands. Later, Monte Formoso showed a fuller, more polished ensemble without losing the regional roots. The line-up has changed many times over the decades, but the method has stayed. Listeners recognise the group by plucked strings like the cavaquinho and viola, frame drums and bagpipes, and by choral singing that keeps the rough edges of village voices.
