History
Brian Free & Assurance is a male Southern gospel quartet built around the soaring high tenor of its founder. Brian Free made his reputation singing tenor with Gold City, one of the leading quartets of the 1980s, and after leaving that group he formed Assurance in the early 1990s as his own vehicle. The group kept the classic four-part quartet format, with bass, baritone, lead and tenor, but pushed it toward a more contemporary sound: bigger band tracks, pop and country touches, and arrangements that build to dramatic key changes and sustained high notes. That combination places it in the progressive wing of Southern gospel, where tradition sets the harmony and modern production sets the energy. Over the years the lineup around Free has changed, as it does in most working quartets, while his voice has stayed at the top of the stack. Albums such as Greater Still and Beyond Amazed belong to that long run. Listeners know the group by tight four-part blend, big finishes and a tenor who climbs well above the rest of the chord.
