History
Brad Paisley is a country singer who is first of all a guitar player, and that ordering explains most of his catalogue. The Telecaster is always audible, chicken picked and clean, quoting bluegrass runs and rockabilly licks inside songs otherwise built for radio. His writing splits neatly in two. On one side the comic songs, delivered deadpan with the joke placed at the end of the line, of which Ticks is the most quoted example. On the other the straight ballads, and Whiskey Lullaby, a duet with Alison Krauss about drink and grief, is as bleak as mainstream Nashville got in that period. She's Everything sits between the two, plain and unornamented. He came out of West Virginia and arrived in Nashville young, and by the late 2000s he was carrying arena tours while still ending shows with long instrumental sections. A listener recognises him by that combination: a punchline, a sad verse, and a guitar solo longer than the format requires.
