History
Born of Osiris mixed deathcore brutality with synthesizers, sweep-picked melodies and a science-fiction sense of scale. The band came from the Chicago suburbs in Illinois and signed to Sumerian Records, part of the wave of American groups that made technical, keyboard-laced deathcore a scene of its own in the late 2000s. A Higher Place in 2009 set out the formula: rapid-fire riffing, dense drumming and synth lines running alongside the guitars rather than behind them. The Discovery in 2011 was longer and more ambitious, full of shifting sections and Eastern-sounding melodic figures, while Tomorrow We Die Alive in 2013 tightened everything into shorter, punchier songs. Guitarist Lee McKinney's lead work and Joe Buras's keyboards give the band its colour, set against Ronnie Canizaro's harsh vocals. Their signature is glittering synth arpeggios over heavy djent-flavoured grooves, fast technical guitar runs and a mood that sounds more cosmic than grim.
