History
Bolt Thrower sounded like an armoured column on the move: mid-tempo, grinding riffs, a massive rhythm section and a relentless, tank-like groove rather than raw speed. The band came out of the Birmingham area in the mid-1980s, starting close to the crust punk and grindcore scene before settling into a weighty death metal sound of its own. Early exposure on John Peel's radio sessions helped them, and their second album Realm of Chaos in 1989 was tied directly to the Warhammer 40,000 tabletop game, down to its artwork. War became their central theme. The IVth Crusade in 1992 and ...For Victory in 1994 refined the formula, with Karl Willetts' deep, barking vocals over riffs that were simple, repetitive and crushing. The band was known for its integrity: they kept ticket and merchandise prices low, refused to chase trends and put out relatively few records. Bolt Thrower ended their career in 2016 after the death of their drummer Martin Kearns. Listeners recognise them instantly by that marching mid-tempo heaviness and the sense that every song is a battle in slow motion.
