History
Bobby McFerrin (born March 11, 1950, in New York City) is an American vocalist known for redefining what a solo voice could do. Son of opera singers Robert McFerrin and Sara Cooper, he grew up in Los Angeles, worked as a jazz pianist through the 1970s, and began singing professionally in 1977 before touring with Jon Hendricks. His 1982 debut for Blue Note established him as a jazz vocalist; using his four-octave range and a cappella technique, he built entire arrangements from his voice and body alone, becoming a forerunner of modern vocal beatboxing. In 1988, his self-produced single "Don't Worry, Be Happy" became the first a cappella song to top the Billboard Hot 100, winning Grammy Awards for Song and Record of the Year. He has won ten Grammys total, later shifted heavily into classical conducting (San Francisco Symphony, Vienna Philharmonic), and recorded the multi-platinum duo album "Hush" with cellist Yo-Yo Ma. In 2020 he was named an NEA Jazz Master.
