History

Bob Marley & The Wailers began as a vocal harmony group in Kingston, three voices trading lines in the ska and rocksteady style of the 1960s, and ended as the band that defined international reggae. The early line-up included Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, and that three-part harmony is the root of the sound even after the group was rebuilt around Marley as the frontman, with a female backing trio answering him and a rhythm section that treated space as an instrument. Signing to Island in the 1970s gave the records a fuller studio finish, guitar and keyboard textures layered over the one drop, which is what made the music legible to rock audiences without softening the politics in the lyrics. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, and the Legend compilation has spent hundreds of weeks on the Billboard 200. The recognisable elements are the bass melody, the skanking offbeat guitar, and the call and response between lead and backing voices.
