History
blink-182 made pop punk sound like three friends in a garage who happened to write hooks that stick for decades. The Southern California trio pairs bright major key melodies with a rhythm section that never slows down, two vocalists trading lines in nasal, unpolished voices, and lyrics about suburban boredom, failed romance and refusing to grow up. Dammit came first and set the tone, a three chord song built on a guitar figure any beginner can learn in an afternoon. Enema of the State is where the production tightened and the songs got shorter and louder, and the singles from it, All the Small Things and What's My Age Again, put the band on daytime radio and music television for years. Travis Barker's drumming pulled the sound away from simple downstrokes toward fills and ghost notes borrowed from punk's more technical corners. Later records turned darker and more spacious, but the identification stays with the early sound: fast, funny and deliberately unserious.
