History

Black Sherif comes from Konongo in Ghana's Ashanti Region, and his music sits where UK drill meets highlife, reggae and the storytelling of Ghanaian street songs. He raps and sings mostly in Twi, and his voice is the first thing a listener notices: raspy, strained, close to crying, pushed so hard it seems to crack on the long notes. He broke through in 2021 with First Sermon and Second Sermon, two confessional drill tracks about hardship and hustle, the second of which got a remix with Burna Boy. In 2022 Kwaku the Traveller, a mid-tempo song about wandering and survival, went to number one on Apple Music in both Ghana and Nigeria, and his debut album The Villain I Never Was followed that October. The record mixes drill beats with acoustic guitar, horn lines and highlife rhythms, and it made him one of the central figures of Ghanaian music in the 2020s: at the 2023 Ghana Music Awards he was named Artiste of the Year. His songs are recognisable by that ragged voice, the mix of Twi and English and a sense of testimony rather than bragging.
