History
Billy Joe Shaver wrote some of the plainest and truest songs of the outlaw country movement. A Texan who worked hard jobs before music, including a sawmill accident that cost him parts of several fingers, he drifted to Nashville as a songwriter and found his break when Waylon Jennings built nearly all of Honky Tonk Heroes (1973) from his songs. That album helped define outlaw country, and Shaver's own debut, Old Five and Dimers Like Me, came out the same year. His writing is spare and conversational, full of working men, hard luck, faith and plain-spoken pride, delivered in a rough, unpolished voice that sounds exactly like the characters he sang about. Songs such as I Been to Georgia on a Fast Train became standards covered by many other artists. In the 1990s he recorded with his son Eddy Shaver, a fierce rock-leaning guitarist, and Tramp on Your Street (1993) gave his songs a harder, electric edge. He kept writing and touring into old age and died in 2020. Listeners recognise him by that craggy Texas voice and lyrics that say the most with the fewest words.
