History

Benny the Butcher raps like someone giving testimony: plain, deliberate, every line about the drug trade delivered with the weight of a man describing what he actually saw. He came up in Buffalo, New York, as part of the Griselda crew alongside his cousins Westside Gunn and Conway the Machine, the trio that brought grimy, sample-heavy East Coast rap back into view in the 2010s. His voice is less abrasive than theirs and more conversational, which is why his hooks and punchlines travel so well. Tana Talk 3, made with The Alchemist and Daringer, set the tone: dusty loops, no drums wasted, and verses dense with street detail and hustler arithmetic. Burden of Proof, produced by Hit-Boy, pushed him toward brighter, more polished beats without losing the storytelling, and Tana Talk 4 went back to the grit. His trademarks are the calm, precise delivery, the ledger-like accounting of risk and profit, and the sense that every bar is written to be quoted.
