History
Ben Tankard plays gospel jazz on keyboards: smooth, radio-friendly grooves, rich chords and melodic piano lines that carry church harmony into the language of contemporary instrumental jazz. Born in Daytona Beach, Florida, the son of a minister and a missionary, he played drums in church as a child. His first path was basketball until a knee injury ended it. After a hard stretch that included a period of homelessness, a church revival turned him toward music. His debut album Keynote Speaker appeared in 1990, and over the following years he recorded for labels including Tribute and Verity. His records helped define instrumental gospel as a genre of its own, he is often called the Godfather of Gospel Jazz, and his albums have won Stellar Awards. Wider audiences met him through the Bravo reality series Thicker Than Water, which followed his family from 2013. His sound is easy to pick out: polished keyboards, warm grooves and melodies that move like hymns.
