History
Ben Frost makes music that treats distortion, feedback and sub-bass as raw material, setting passages of near silence against sudden bursts of overwhelming noise. Born in Melbourne, he moved to Reykjavík in 2005 and became part of the Bedroom Community collective and label, which released Theory of Machines in 2007 and By the Throat in 2009. Theory of Machines built slow, grinding pieces from layered guitars and electronics, drawing on classical minimalism as much as on punk and black metal. By the Throat went darker, with growling low end, strings and animal sounds that give the album a feral, hunted atmosphere. Later solo work moved to Mute Records with A U R O R A in 2014 and The Centre Cannot Hold in 2017, records built on violent percussion and blown-out synthesis. Frost also directed a music-theatre adaptation of Iain Banks's The Wasp Factory and wrote the score for all three seasons of the Netflix series Dark, where his heavy, humming textures became part of the show's identity. Listeners recognise him by physical pressure, extreme dynamics and a cold, cinematic sense of dread.
