History

Belyy Oryol worked a lane of Russian pop that leaned on ornament: large string arrangements, a slow waltzing lift in the chorus, and lyrics addressed to the country itself rather than to a person. The group's best known song, Kak upoitelny v Rossii vechera, became something close to an unofficial standard, sung at tables and at state occasions far more often than it was ever played as a pop single, and its nostalgia for an imagined pre-revolutionary Russia of officers, balls and summer evenings set the tone for much of the catalogue. Potomu chto nelzya byt krasivoy takoy worked the opposite register, light and comic, and showed the project could do more than pathos. The lineup shifted over the years and different vocalists fronted the same material, which mattered less here than it would elsewhere, because the arrangement and the sentiment carried the identity. A listener recognises the sound at once: velvet romance, a chorus built for a room to join, and no irony anywhere in it.
