History

Belle and Sebastian arrived out of Glasgow with a first album recorded cheaply as a college project and a sound that ignored almost everything else happening in British guitar music at the time. Instead of volume there was acoustic guitar, brushed drums, trumpet, strings and a soft, unforced lead vocal that sounds like it is confiding rather than performing. The songs are short stories: named characters, schools and churches, small humiliations, jokes that land two lines after you expect them. If You're Feeling Sinister turned the band into a reference point for a generation of quiet indie pop, and the Brit Award for Best Newcomer in 1999 made them briefly notorious, since nobody in the industry expected the vote to go that way. Over time the arrangements grew brighter and more orchestrated and later records flirted with disco rhythms, but the writing habit never changed. What a listener recognises is gentle delivery with sharp, unsentimental observation underneath it.
