History

Béla Fleck is the banjo player who proved the five-string could live far outside bluegrass without losing its roots. Born in New York and named after the composers Bartók, Webern and Janáček, he picked up the banjo as a teenager and developed a fluid, chromatic style that could handle jazz lines as easily as fiddle tunes. Early solo records such as Natural Bridge in 1982 already showed the reach. In the early 1980s he joined New Grass Revival, the band that defined progressive bluegrass, and in 1988 he released Drive, a straight bluegrass record made with the top players of the day that is still held up as a model of the modern style. The same year he started Béla Fleck and the Flecktones with bassist Victor Wooten, a band that mixed banjo with jazz fusion, funk and electronic percussion. Since then he has recorded with classical musicians, West African players and jazz pianists, and has won Grammys across an unusually wide spread of categories. His playing is marked by clean, rolling picking, bold harmony and a sense of humour in the phrasing.
