History

Beak> is a Bristol trio built around Geoff Barrow of Portishead, and its sound is the kind of Krautrock people make when they care more about the groove than the reference: a rubbery, repeating bass line, dry motorik drums, droning organ and analogue synths, with vocals buried low in the mix. The band formed in 2009 with a working rule taken from its earliest sessions: tracks were recorded live in one room, with little or no overdubbing, so the records keep the tension of three players locking into a pattern and riding it. The first album appeared that year on Invada, the label Barrow co-runs, followed by >> in 2012 and >>> in 2018, with the lineup shifting along the way. Beyond Neu! and Can, the music draws on the soundtracks of John Carpenter, 1970s library records and the grey, rain-soaked texture of English post-punk, and it often sounds ominous rather than euphoric. Listeners recognise Beak> by the bass, which does most of the talking, and by a sense of humour that keeps the menace from turning pompous.
