History

Baris Manco built Anatolian rock out of two materials that were not supposed to mix: Turkish folk melody, with its modal turns and saz phrasing, and a full electric rock band. He began recording in the 1960s and spent the following decade turning village songs and his own writing into arrangements with fuzz guitar, organ and a rhythm section, without flattening the melodies into Western shapes. "Daglar Daglar" and "Gulpembe" are the songs most people name first, both slow, sung in a warm and unpolished baritone that stays close to speech. "Domates Biber Patlican" shows the other side, playful and almost nonsense-driven. He was also a television presenter for years, travelling and making programmes that reached households far outside the rock audience, which is why his standing in Turkey extends well past music. Listeners recognise the long hair, the heavy rings and a voice that sounds like it is telling a story rather than performing one.
