History

Barbara Tucker is a Brooklyn singer, songwriter and choreographer whose big, gospel-rooted voice became one of the signatures of 1990s New York soulful house. Music ran in the family through her father, Jayotis Washington of the a cappella group the Persuasions, and before her own records she danced and choreographed for acts such as C&C Music Factory and Deee-Lite. Her singles were produced by Masters at Work, the duo of Little Louie Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez, and released on Strictly Rhythm. Beautiful People in 1994 became her defining track: a rolling piano-and-organ house groove under an uplifting, almost churchy vocal about unity on the dance floor. I Get Lifted and Stay Together followed and also became big club records in the US and in the UK, where she became a regular club draw. Her records sit where vocal house and gospel house meet, with the singer cast as preacher as much as diva. Listeners recognise Tucker by the powerful, testifying delivery and the joyful, communal message of her songs.
