History
BANKS is the stage name of Jillian Rose Banks, an American singer, songwriter, and producer born in 1988 in Orange County, California, and raised in the San Fernando Valley. She studied psychology at USC while writing songs on a keyboard she taught herself to play after her parents' divorce. Her 2013 demo led to a BBC Radio 1 premiere and a support slot on The Weeknd's tour, launching her fast. Her debut album, Goddess (2014), built on the EPs Fall Over and London, reached number 12 on the Billboard 200 with singles "Warm Water" and "Beggin for Thread," and she played Coachella and Bonnaroo that year. Her sound mixes alternative R&B, electronic production, and dark, hushed pop vocals, citing Fiona Apple as an influence. She followed with The Altar (2016), III (2019), the independently released Serpentina (2022), and Off with Her Head (2025). A decade after Goddess, artists including Lorde, Ethel Cain, and Doechii have named her as an influence.
