History
In Baden Powell's hands a guitar could sound like a whole percussion section: driving thumb-picked bass lines, sharp rhythmic strums and fast single-note runs, all played on nylon strings with a classical player's discipline. Born in the state of Rio de Janeiro and named after the founder of the Scout movement, he grew up among the samba and choro players of Rio and became one of the most gifted guitarists of the bossa nova generation. His partnership with the poet Vinicius de Moraes produced songs such as "Berimbau" and "Canto de Ossanha" and the album Os Afro-sambas, which drew on Afro-Brazilian religious music from Bahia and gave bossa nova a darker, more ritual pulse. He spent long periods in Europe, where his solo guitar records and concerts found a devoted audience. Listeners recognise him by the percussive attack of his right hand, the modal, minor-key melodies with their Bahian flavour, and the sense that one guitar is carrying melody, harmony and drum at once.
