History

Avril Lavigne arrived in 2002 with a version of pop punk that kept the guitars and the attitude but was built to sit on mainstream radio. Complicated and Sk8er Boi come from Let Go, a record that sold in enormous numbers and made the tie over a tank top a recognisable look for a generation of teenagers. The writing is plain and direct: verses that describe a specific person doing a specific annoying thing, choruses that land on one flat statement. Her voice is the other half of it, a slightly flat, nasal Canadian delivery with no vibrato and no showing off, which is exactly why it read as honest next to the polished pop singers around her. Girlfriend, from later in the decade, pushed the bratty side further over a chant hook. She has moved between that sound and quieter acoustic records since. What a listener recognises is the combination of skate punk chords with pop song structure and a voice that refuses to sound trained.
