History
Avraam Russo brought a Mediterranean and Middle Eastern colour into Russian estrada at a moment when the charts were mostly synth pop and guitar ballads. He was born in the Middle East and sang abroad before settling in Russia in the late 1990s, and the accent of that background stayed in the phrasing: ornamented line endings, a slight eastern bend on sustained notes, a tenor that opens up rather than tightens at the top. The material is classic estrada, mid tempo love songs with big string arrangements and a chorus repeated until it lands. Daleko and Amor were the songs that put him on radio through the middle of the 2000s, and Prosto lyubit tebya works the same register, direct, sentimental, pitched at a wide audience. What a listener recognises is the timbre, warm and slightly nasal, with melismatic turns that no other singer on Russian pop radio of that period was using. The records of that period were made for television concerts and big halls, which explains the scale of the delivery and the plainness of the lyrics.
