History

Aux 88 are one of the core acts of Detroit techno bass, the strand of electro that fuses the machine funk of Kraftwerk and early Detroit electro with booming, speaker-testing low end. The project came out of Detroit in the early 1990s and became closely tied to the Direct Beat label, which specialised in exactly this sound. Their tracks run on crisp drum machine patterns, rapid electro breaks, vocoder voices and deep, sustained bass tones, designed for car systems and dance floors at the same time. Bass Magnetic in 1993 is an early example of the style, while the album Is It Man or Machine? in 1996 carried the robotic, futurist theme across a full record, with lyrics about technology and identity delivered through vocoders. Xeo-Genetic in 1998 continued the same path. Aux 88 helped keep the electro tradition alive in Detroit during the years when techno moved toward more minimal forms, and they are regularly cited by later electro producers. A listener recognises them by the heavy sub-bass, precise 808-style rhythms and the steady stream of machine voices.
