History
Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas was born October 13, 1980, in Glen Cove, New York. After early stints with Jive and Epic Records went nowhere, she was discovered by producer Irv Gotti and signed to his Murder Inc. label, an imprint of Def Jam. Her breakout came in 2002: she sang hooks on Ja Rule's "Always on Time" and Fat Joe's "What's Luv?", both Top 5 hits, while her own debut single "Foolish" spent ten straight weeks at number one. For a few weeks that spring she held two of the top spots on the Hot 100 at once, a feat no female artist had managed before. Her self-titled debut album followed in April 2002, selling over 500,000 copies in its first week, going triple platinum, and winning the Grammy for Best Contemporary R&B Album. Ashanti's sound blended smooth R&B vocals with the hip-hop-driven Murder Inc. production style of the early 2000s. She followed up with Chapter II in 2003 and later returned to acting and stage work.
