History

Arkady Severny (born Arkady Zvezdin, 1939) never released a record. Everything that survives of him is tape: private sessions cut in apartments and rented rooms in Leningrad and Odessa, copied hand to hand through the magnitizdat network. He trained as a forestry engineer and worked in timber supply while recording on the side. The sessions were staged as concerts with no audience, or almost none. He announced songs to an imaginary hall, joked between numbers, and the musicians tuned up on the tape. Behind him were the Odessa sessions with «Черноморская чайка» and, in Leningrad, «Братья Жемчужные». Room noise, a guitar slightly out, a clarinet or a violin sliding in over a shuffle: that texture belongs to the style, it is not a fault of the equipment. He died in Leningrad in 1980, still without an official release. Documented detail about his life is thin and much of what circulates comes from memoirs rather than paperwork, so the recordings themselves stay the firmest evidence.
