History
Ari Lennox (born Courtney Shanade Salter, March 26, 1991) is an American R&B singer-songwriter from Washington, D.C., known for a warm, conversational vocal style rooted in classic soul and neo-soul. She built an early following by self-releasing music on SoundCloud while working day jobs, including a stint driving for Uber. Rapper Omen passed her music to J. Cole, and in 2015 she signed to Cole's Dreamville Records (an Interscope imprint) as the label's first female artist. She surfaced on Dreamville's Revenge of the Dreamers II standout "Backseat" and released her major-label EP Pho (2016) before contributing background vocals to Cole's 4 Your Eyez Only and touring as his opening act. Her 2019 debut album, Shea Butter Baby, was a critical and commercial breakthrough, and she later appeared on the Grammy-nominated Revenge of the Dreamers III. She followed with the EP Away Message and the album Age/Sex/Location, both in 2022. After nearly a decade with Dreamville, she amicably parted ways with the label in 2025 while remaining signed to Interscope.
