History

Apollo Brown makes gritty, melancholy boom bap: soul and jazz loops that sound pulled straight off worn vinyl, heavy kicks and snares, and a steady mid-tempo pace that leaves room for dense lyrics. Based in Detroit, he became one of the core producers of the independent label Mello Music Group. His instrumental album Clouds (2011) showed how much mood he could draw from a single loop and a well-chosen break. He is best known for full-length collaborations in which he produces every track for one rapper, most notably Trophies (2012) with O.C. of the Diggin' in the Crates crew, as well as projects with Guilty Simpson, Ras Kass and Skyzoo. Sincerely, Detroit (2019) turned back to his city, gathering a long list of local MCs over his beats. The palette rarely changes: crackle, filtered strings and horns, pitched soul vocals and drums that hit hard enough to carry a record without any hook.
