History

Aphrodite is the alias of London producer and DJ Gavin King, one of the names most closely tied to jump-up jungle and its bouncing, hook-driven basslines. He came through the early 1990s hardcore scene, working with Micky Finn as Urban Shakedown, whose Some Justice reached the UK top 40 in 1992. As jungle took shape, King and Finn ran the Urban Takeover label, and King's own Aphrodite Recordings followed. Tracks such as Bad Ass and Style From The Darkside show the formula he helped define: rolling, chopped breakbeats, a big wobbling bass riff that works like a chorus, and short vocal or film samples dropped in as hooks. It was music built for the dancefloor and the MC, less dark than techstep and more playful. His self-titled album came out on V2 in 1999 and brought the sound to a wider audience; Aftershock followed in 2002. Springy basslines, crisp edits and a sense of fun that never lets the tempo drop are his trademarks.
