History

Anitta built her career on funk carioca, the fast, hard-panned baile sound of Rio, and then spent a decade widening it without letting go of the beat underneath. She grew up in a working class suburb of the city and learned the genre in the places it was actually played rather than in a studio, which shows in how she phrases: clipped, percussive, sitting right on the rhythm. From there she moved into reggaeton and Spanish language pop, recording across Portuguese, Spanish and English, often on the same record, and treating each market as a separate audience to be sung to directly. Envolver reached the top of the global streaming chart on the strength of its dance, a floor level routine that spread faster than the song itself. Girl from Rio takes a different route: it reworks the melody of the best known bossa nova standard and answers its postcard picture of the city with the suburb she came from. Her shows are choreography first, and the vocal is built to survive it.
