History
Angelic Upstarts played blunt, chant-driven punk that became a cornerstone of Oi!, with terrace-style choruses, simple hard-hitting riffs and lyrics rooted in working-class anger and left-wing politics. The band formed in 1977 in South Shields in north-east England, led by vocalist Thomas 'Mensi' Mensforth. Their stance was openly anti-fascist and socialist, which set them apart in a scene where parts of the audience pulled the other way. The debut single The Murder of Liddle Towers, released in 1978, attacked police violence after a death in custody and remains one of the band's best-known songs. The band signed to Warner Bros. for the album Teenage Warning in 1979, which reached number 29 in the UK, and later moved to EMI for 2,000,000 Voices in 1981, another Top 40 album. Still from the Heart followed in 1982, before later records came out on independent labels. The group split and reformed more than once and kept recording into the 2010s. Mensi died in December 2021. Their music is recognised by his rough, declamatory voice and gang-shouted choruses.
